HVAC Modeling of a 19-Story Commercial Tower for Renowned American General Contractor

Our Client – New York Based Specialty General Contractor

The client is a leading American MEP and HVAC contractor. Founded in the early 20th century, our client has a great reputation in the AEC industry as a specialty general contractor. With over eight decades of construction experience, the client’s company has worked with a number of reputed firms, general contractors, and project owners in developing some of the architectural masterpieces. Recognized by popular magazines as the #1 plumbing contractors in New York, our client has delivered a variety of projects, including transportation systems, water treatment plants, high-rise buildings, educational infrastructures, and many more.

Requirement for HVAC Modeling of a Huge Commercial Building in Revit

For a high-value commercial building project, the client approached IndiaCADworks (ICW) seeking HVAC modeling in Autodesk Revit. After the initial discussion on the requirements and learning about ICW’s capabilities on BIM coordination and clash detection, the client also requested for a coordinated Revit file by doing detailed clash detection of the MEP systems.

The requirements from the client involved HVAC modeling of a 19-story building for which the client had provided the AutoCAD files and PDF copy of the HVAC drawings. The client had also provided the architectural floor plans in Navisworks for reference.

Project Challenge - A Tight Delivery Timeline Amid Pandemic

Amid the pandemic, the delivery timeline of 3 weeks was very tight. Especially, as the HVAC modeling project was also involved detailed clash detection and a coordinated file as the final reference document for the different MEP teams. To deal with this, ICW formed a team of 10 specialist MEP engineers and Navisworks specialists so that the client doesn’t have to miss their project milestones.

The Process Followed by IndiaCADworks to Deliver the HVAC Models

Except for the timeline, as a BIM MEP service provider, the project was not a difficult one for ICW’s team. With a stepwise process and multi-level QC, the project was delivered on time. The process followed by the team was as follows:

  1. After receiving the HVAC drawings and floor plan files, our engineering team studied the drawings and formed a team of 9 modelers and one dedicated QC specialist to work on the project.
  2. The project was divided into seven milestones. The team followed a top-down model and started modeling from the 19th floor.
  3. The HVAC models were created in Revit and quality-checked before sending it for clash detection.
  4. After each milestone, the modeled files were sent to the client for their inputs.
  5. The models then imported into Navisworks, and the clashes were removed.
  6. After addressing the inputs from the client, the final coordinated Revit file without clashes was sent to the client.

Precise 3D Models and Coordinated Revit File Meeting the Client’s Requirements

The client was satisfied with the precise HVAC models addressing all their inputs proactively by the IndiaCADworks team. As our team was able to take up and deliver the clash detection and coordinated file, the client didn’t have to look for another vendor to deal with the additional project requirement. The project completed on a great note with high appreciation from the client and assurance of future partnership.
